Dear Premier Ford, 
I am writing to extend my gratitude to your government for making puppy mills illegal in Ontario. This initiative is a significant step forward in improving the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act, and I greatly appreciate your commitment to animal welfare across Ontario.
This is a step forward for the animals, and I believe we can go even further. Consulting with the public and animal welfare groups including the Ontario Animal Welfare Network will make all the difference in protecting Ontario’s animals.  
Our province needs more officers who are trained and specialized in animal welfare, to meet reports with the urgency that is so needed. One hundred officers for the entire province are not enough to investigate and respond to the number of reports of animal cruelty and neglect. Increasing the number of officers responding to cases will help ensure no animal is left behind.  
Ontario’s current system relies on caring people to report animal cruelty. Many people who report a case of animal abuse do not know what questions will be asked or what information they will need to provide for a case to be investigated. Once they report, they do not know if the cases has been investigated and what next steps they should take. I strongly recommend introducing greater transparency to the process of investigations to build public trust that PAWS officers take all reports of animal abuse and neglect very seriously.  
Introducing the PUPS Act was a step in the right direction, but I believe that even more can be done to keep animals safe in this province. I urge your government to consider my concerns — shared by many other constituents and animal advocates — and work towards more enhancements that put the well-being of Ontario’s animals first. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
