After public outcry following the discovery of animal testing at an Ontario research faciity, Doug Ford has pledged to end scientific testing on dog and cats in Ontario. This commitment is an important step forward and the provincial government must now ensure that this promise is backed by meaningful action. True accountability requires stronger oversight, concrete policies and humane alternatives to prevent suffering in Ontario’s research institutions for all animals.

Dear Premier:
Thank you so much for taking a strong stance to protect Ontario's cats and dogs from being used in scientific research. In 2023, the Canadian Council on Animal Care — Canada’s only national oversight for scientific activities involving animals — reported that more than 80,000 animals in Canada were subjected to procedures which cause severe pain. 
Ontario has an opportunity to invest in non-animal testing methods that will support our province’s research and development initiatives, and further cement Ontario's commitment to animal welfare. 
I write this letter today to urge your government to invest in and accelerate the adoption of non-animal testing methods during 2026's budget season.
Advances in science have resulted in accurate, ethical and cost-effective alternatives to animal testing. These methods not only spare animals from unnecessary suffering but also help reduce costly failures in clinical trials by providing results that are more directly relevant to human biology.
This is an opportunity to improve both public health outcomes and animal welfare without delaying crucial medical discoveries that benefit human and animal health. I hope you will champion this important issue for Ontario.
