Meet Marcie and her babies.

Marcie was found on the side of a busy road, steps from heavy traffic, with three wet newborn kittens clinging to her for survival. Everything about her told the same story: she was trembling, exhausted and doing everything she could to protect her kittens.

She arrived just as our busiest time of year was beginning.

At the Ottawa Humane Society, early spring is when the number of newborn kittens in need surge. Many arrive fragile and alone. Some won't survive without immediate care.

In the weeks ahead, many more litters of kittens will need food, medical care and a safe place to shelter. The number of animals with nowhere else to go will rise quickly.
